An Orange Afternoon

Another slow sunset where we said no hard feelings

then weeks of unexpected silence measured in quiet waves —

the feeling of hope and malaise but things were so strange

on that orange afternoon when you were no longer there.

There was the subtle ripple of letting this go

met with all the resistance I had in my world

then the force of change I knew was already on its way,

as the power slipped out of my control and into your home instead.

Now you come back, black and blue but mostly unchanged,

only your skin tinged with a purple-gray but your tone the same

and it makes me miss the way I once saw the good in you in myself too,

well before the truth was brought to light.
